Week 19 - Q&A

1.  What have you learned about yourself that has surprised you, since becoming a missionary?
Umm, everyone tells me that I have a ton of potential. And that if I just continue to be obedient and do the things I'm supposed to, that potential will grow. And so I guess I've never thought of our true potential as children of God.

2. How many missionary tags do you have?  Are they different?  How often do they get lost?
We have two, one clip one, that we usually wear with our white shirts. Then a magnet, that we wear with pretty much everything that won't fit the clip. And you can replace them anytime, just for a small fee. And it's fairly common... Not too often though. It's the one thing we NEED to have every morning, so it doesn't usually get lost ;)

3. Did you have an opportunity to do any service this week?
Yes, on New Years actually. We went and helped a family move that morning :) that's all though!

4. Who had the most positive influence on you this week and why?
I think President and Sister Ahlander. They have been so helpful for helping me deal with the things that have been going on lately. And they are very very supportive. :)

5. Tell us one thing that might surprise us about missionary life.
Umm, we are actually real people. ;) it seems like so many people don't envision us as normal people. They're like "oh man! It's the missionaries. They're all the same."

Something that surprised me is how little time we have to exercise. It is hard to exercise here. Haha! We don't walk everywhere here, because we are blessed with cars. And so we really have very little time to exercise.

Pics from Week 19

Elder Holt wearing the new jacket he got for Christmas.

So Funny story.....I sent Gavin a box filled with just some silly New Years Eve stuff, so that the Elders, (knowing they had to stay in) could make their own fun.  :)  So, instead of the package being delivered on time, for some reason it made a detour through Spokane Washington, and got delivered 3 days late, on January 2nd.  Well, they still had a good time, just a few days later.  HAHA!

Happy New Year from the Sahara Ave Elders!

Week 19 Group Email

Hey hey everyone!

This last week has been super awesome! :)

First off, HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!! :) I hope everyone had a great time! We had a super good New Year's Eve dinner at our bishops house. It is a Filipino dish called Lumpia! It's basically egg rolls, with a super delicious sweet and sour sauce :) it was super delicious. Then we had to be by 6, so went back to the apartment and played board games. It was super fun! Then all day on New Year's Day, we went shopping, played basketball, and watched the approved movies, which were Tarzan,
and The Prince of Egypt :) it was super good!

So there have been a few super awesome things this week. We found a new investigator! His name is "J", and he committed to being baptized!!! That was so cool! He is really interested in learning all about our church, and he says as soon as he finds out its true, he will join it :) it's super cool! I love finding people like this! It's so cool! Miracles have been everywhere lately.

All of our investigators have been doing great! Since "S" hasn't been progressing much, we told him that especially since we have 1 PM church now, we need to see effort on his part, and that effort needs to include coming to church. So we won't be regularly teaching him anymore, because he needs to take his 37 years of investigating and put some real effort in it now. "D" has been doing great still! Can't complain about that guy ;) he's awesome! The "S" family has
been very very busy, and we weren't able to visit them this week. But everyone else is doing good still!

It's been a pretty typical week other than that stuff! It's been great! :)

I just wanted to leave a quick challenge with you guys. Especially since it's
the start of the year, I think a really good thing to do along with our New Years resolutions would be to start doing something that you haven't done before. Pres. Uchtdorf shared a old Chinese Proverb "the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now" and that statement is very true. Now is as good a time as any other time to start something we've always wanted to. To change something you've always wanted to. To be something you've always
wanted to be. And we can change and become what we've always wanted to be one decision at a time :) so that's my challenge to you guys. Find something to change. And really commit to it. Show your Heavenly Father that you want to be closer to Him this year. And one of the best ways to do that is to write it down :) I've learned that as well. So get out there and do something! :)

Love you all!

lder Holt :)

Daily Notes from Week 19

Monday:
We had a pretty normal P-Day today! We went shopping, cleaned our apartment, and then went to the church building to hang out and play sports, and email. We had dinner at Bro. Hodson's house! He is a super cool guy! The whole family is awesome! Other than that, nothing really happened today.

Tuesday:
Today was really great! We got to spend the majority of the day finding people on a list that bishop gave us. It was the households unassigned to be home taught list. It was this list that led us to the "S" family, so I was really excited! Nothing really came of it this time, except for a lady saying she wants absolutely nothing to do with the church or home teachers. Haha! But that's okay!! And then we had a lesson with "D.M." tonight as well! He's still doing great! :)

Wednesday:
We had a lesson with "S" today! We talked about Alma 32! There was so many good scriptures Steve really needed to hear. And we also talked about how church is going to be switching times to 1 o' clock! And that will be a lot easier for "S" to come! And we also had a lesson with a new investigator! His name is "J"!  He has heard a few things about our church, and wants to learn a lot more about it. He has studied lots of different religions, and hasn't really found one that he likes too much. It's gonna be awesome! :) We are teaching him again on Saturday!

Thursday:
Today was super great! We got to spend time weekly planning, which we do every Thursday, but the mission has been trying to change it a little bit, and it was a good change! We also got to go to our bishops house for dinner, and we had this super good Filipino dish called Lumpia! It was super super delicious :) then we came back, because it's New Year's Eve and stuff ;) we came home and played some board games with Elder McBride and Elder Walker, the two other elders in our apartment :) and we also watched the best two years on a little DVD player!

Friday:
Today was awesome too! We had a non-pros day for the holiday, so today we spent a lot of time relaxing, and we got to watch Tarzan and the Prince of Egypt :) it's weird to watch tv, because it seems like it's been so long since I have! Haha! And we went shopping today at the Summerlin mall! And spent time playing basketball :) basically a P-Day plus movies ;) it was super fun! :)

Saturday:
Today was super good! We taught our new investigator, "J", and committed him to being baptized!!!!!! :D it was so good! There was a cool spirit in the room when we were talking about baptism. It was so cool :) Then we had a zone meeting today, and we are focusing on finding people still. It's been good! It was a good day!

Sunday:
Today was great! I learned a lot at church. And "D" came! It was so good to see him! And he stayed the whole three hours! :D it's strange having church at 1 PM again though. I like 9 AM church the best ;) but it was still good! We had dinner with the Call's tonight! They are seriously the nicest people ever. They have a super beautiful home in Spanish Trails. And he is 80 and just retired on the 31st of December. Like, three days ago. Haha! He is awesome! Anyway, that's mostly it today! :)

Week 18 - Email from Elder Holt

Merry late Christmas everyone! ;) I hope everyone had a fantastic week! I sure did!

This week was so great! We spent the early part of the week knocking on a lot of empty doors, because everyone went out of town for the holidays. But the people who answered seemed to be pretty open to what we had to say! Hopefully we can go back and they'll let us in again :)

On Christmas we spent the morning at our zone leaders house opening all the presents we got from our families! Oh man! It was so fun! Haha! Then we went to a members house where we had lunch, and skyped our families! It was so so good to see them again.  I can't imagine how
people feel when their house isn't just up the highway a little bit (Haha!  jk) But after skyping, we went to our bishops house and played some games with his family, and then went to the church to play some games with the whole zone again :) it was tons of fun :)

The next day we went on exchanges, and I was with Elder McBride for the day, in his area! He helped me learn a few things that I had been struggling with, and it was a super fun day!

Our investigators are doing awesome!"D"is doing great! We went to his house on Christmas Eve! Haha! He was the one who let us use his phone and stuff to call home and organize a Skype time with our families for Christmas!
"S" is also doing good! I think he'll come around slowly but surely. We met with the "J" family again as well! It had been a while, but we are meeting with the regularly again now. I know they'll continue to progress! :)

That's mostly it for this week! I hope you all have a fantastic New Years holiday! It'll be the first year I won't stay up all night ;) thanks for all of your Christmas cards and everything! I'll talk to
you next week! :)

Elder Holt :)

Daily Notes from Week 18

Monday:
We had a great day today! It was a very relaxed P-Day. :) It was really really nice. :) haha! We just spent the day at the church after we went shopping for a bit. And while we were shopping, we were getting some ties, and a super nice lady said merry Christmas to us, and bought our ties for us. :) It was so nice. :) Then we spent the night at the Carlson's, who is such an amazing family. :) Bro. Carlson is our young men's leader, and he is just awesome. It was a super good day! :)

Tuesday:
Today was a good day! We got to visit the "J" family again! They are still doing great! "L" is still having a hard time with a few things, but she is still doing great. "M" is doing awesome as well! I'm really excited that they are letting us back into their home to let us teach them again. They are so ready for this gospel :) and we also had a lesson with "D"! He's doing well too! :)

Wednesday:
We had a great today again! We tried to contact a super cool referral we got, for a guy who thinks it's really weird how there are so many churches here. He's from another country. So hopefully we can contact him. :) And we went caroling with the young men and women! It was super fun! We went to an old folks retirement home then we went to Biaggio's pizzeria for dinner. :) It was a super good day!

Thursday:
Christmas Eve.... What....? Did that just happen? It's like 60 degrees out here. What the heck? ;) but anyway, today was great! So we went to visit some people in Apache pines, the typical apartment complex we always work in, and I felt prompted to go visit the "S" Family, a less active family who Elder Duce and I used to visit when I first got here, and they FINALLY ANSWERED! :D They hadn't answered to us in so long. We were so happy to see them. We are having dinner with them soon too. :) Ahhh it was so great :) they're hopefully coming to church on Sunday too! :) To hear me speak... I'm speaking in church BTW... Haha! And also, it was so cool to be able to call home and organize a Skype time for tomorrow. :) I'm so excited!!! :)

Friday: (Christmas)
Oh my gosh! It was Christmas today? Coulda fooled me ;) Just kidding. It's just nice and toasty out there ;) haha! Just kidding about that too. It was around 40. Which is pretty darn cold for this place. But anyway, Christmas was so great! It was so so SO amazing to skype my family! :) It helped me so much, just to see their smiling faces. I just was reassured that everything is okay at home. :) It was a blessing. I'm lucky to be able to be in the mission I am and Skype, let alone email every week :) but it was such a fun day! We went to the Leavitt's house to Skype, then when we finished that, we went to Bishop Wilkerson's house and played some board games with them! It was way fun! :) Then we went to the church building as a zone and played basketball, and some other games there :) It was such a good day! :)

Saturday:
I went on exchanges with Elder McBride for today! It was a lot of fun! It's the first exchange of my transfer, and it feels like it's been forever since I've been on an exchange. So it was really good! :) He talked to me a lot about learning to vent out my stress. And it's been really good to learn about! It was a super good day though! We spent the day in his area, so I don't really know the investigators enough to update you guys... :) haha! :) Oh hey - one of the families in his area had a new Hoverboard!  My family got some for Christmas and I saw them when I skyped, so they let me try it!  It was awesome!

Sunday:
Well, church was great today! Except for the part where everyone else had to listen to me speak. ;) Just kidding. It was actually really good! I'm grateful I had the opportunity to share my testimony with our ward. I prepared a totally different talk than I actually gave. I just felt the spirit working through me today, more than I ever have. It was amazing. I just felt like I was literally opening my mouth, and words came out. It was just so cool to feel that. And after I sat down after I finished my talk, I just felt something change inside me. I all of a sudden felt a burning desire to stay here on my mission. I felt an overwhelming sense of a feeling that I need to be here. It was an experience I have been praying for for so long now. And today, I just felt it all. I completely feel like I need to be here now, and there's nothing that could change that.  :)
